St. Augustine "The Christian should be an alleluia from head to foot."
Hey friends, welcome to this episode of my Tennessee table. It's going to be a good one. And we're so happy that you are with us. Lele. How's the week been sister? Listen. January is over. Did you? Yes, we made it. We made it to February. Everybody keeps saying that like, Oh, we made it through January. And I keep thinking, Oh gosh, well guys, February is like, I know it's a shorter month, but it's still kind of the same. Oh, like weather wise, sickness wise, you know, it's kind of the same song. Second verse. So I'm like, Yay, we made it through January. And then I'm like, Oh, but what's different about February? So I don't know. It's been, but it's been a good week. I'm glad it's February. This week we have some beautiful weather on the docket. It's like in the, like, Hi, what is happening? This is really weird. So my little tulips, my little crocus, they're coming out. Is that, that's not good. Yeah. I didn't think that was good. I went and had a little talk with them. I'm like, Oh honey. You need to just stop. Stop growing. Because we might get, I don't know. We might get some more cold, cold weather. Mm hmm. But yeah, I'm not a gardener, so I don't know, but I have heard that if things peak or start to grow too early, it's not good. Yeah. So anyways, but the weather is gorgeous. The weather's beautiful. Beautiful outside. It's so good for long walks. Yes. we see each other. as you pass my house for your long walk. I do. I see you. Yes. In your garden. In the, yeah, that's where I was yesterday. My little area. Yeah. Right. So the week's been good for you. Kids are great. Kids are better. Super busy. And we've got like a million things going on like the rest of the morals of the world. So, you know, you're just kind of like, hold on for dear life. And you're like, okay, well, we're probably not eating dinner at home this whole week. So we'll just figure that out. Well, at least you're mentally prepared for that. Yeah. Except for us telling Julie, no more chicken tenders. We've got to quit the chicken tender places, guys. Like I cannot, mommy's jeans don't fit right now because of all the chicken tenders and french fries we are consuming. So we got to quit the chicken tender places. So I'm opting for some healthier places. I guess we'll see. I don't know. It's hard with kids. Like we go to, I mean, not every day or every week, but there's a place in town that's organic, everything's organic and we go because we like it. It's a little more expensive, but there's just two of us and you have. Children. Yeah. I know what place you're talking about because it's one of my favorite places to go. Can we just say urban? Oh, it's so good. Urban market. If you're in the area, it's the best, but yeah, I do not take my kids. I'm not paying for a 20 grilled cheese for you. No, thank you. No. Yeah. They're club salad. Oh my gosh. It's so good. I've had some tacos. I've had a lot of things there. I mean, we've been here for a couple years, and then when guests come. We always go there because it's always so good, they love it. So this brings me to something very important because while I was there, so we were talking about deodorant like natural deodorant. Yeah We'll do we talk about that in a couple episodes. I don't even remember because I said I'm making some changes No, that's right. Yeah, and I did and you you're doing natural deodorant Yeah, I had been doing it for a little bit not thrilled with mine But at the Herb and Market they have this company called little seed company. Oh, no, this is not sponsored by the way Oh, no, it's not we're just really telling you all the good stuff. We are you know that Yes. If it's not sponsored, you know we mean it. Yes. Right? Right. We don't have to say it. We don't have to say it. So the little seed farm, they have a lot of products that are natural, but this deodorant Oh, amazing. Amazing. Amazing. I'm going to give it a try. It's a cream base. I took one of the little samples. They gave me some little samples. I'm sitting here looking at you and you have like five or six different flavors. I know. So, wow, that's a lot. You still sweat, which we should. That's healthy. You're supposed to, yeah. But, you don't smell. So that's been part of my week, so I hope y'all have had a great week to and maybe even tried one of the spiritual practices that we've talked about in the last couple episodes. We talked about the spiritual practice of fasting week before that we did confession and what we told each other lately was that we were going to do a fast for a week or so of something. so whether that's the phone or caffeine or Netflix or whatever it's gonna be so I wanted to check in how to go You know what? I fine. What did you what did you fast the the phone? Okay. I think I was kind of already doing this. So this wasn't anything new for me necessarily I was like, I'm just gonna practice what I'm already doing. Yeah Fast from the phone and it's super helpful. Here's one thing I noticed and maybe I've talked about this before. I, my kids get more of my attention. I'm not as short tempered, especially if I put my phone away and fast from it, like from 7 p. m. at night on, they just get more of me. And usually that point in the day, I'm kind of losing it a little bit. Like my, my attention, it's been a long day, you know, I mean, it is. It's been a long day. You're tired. You're, you've hit the end of the day. They're tired. They're not wanting to listen. They've been at school all day. So it's just, there's a lot of, there's a lot going on there. And so because I am not distracted by my phone or sitting there scrolling and they're trying to get my attention, like, hold on, hold on, hold on. It's just everything's smoother. It's just a smoother night for me, for my children. And so I'm like, this is really good. I should be doing this every day. So good. Yeah. I'm going to intentionally. I mean, I'm already kind of doing it, but I'm really going to be like, this is so good for me. I've got to keep doing this. Well, I had not done the phone media fast, social media fast. I've done the food one. So I thought, okay, I'm going to try that because I thought, I'm not on my phone. That much on social media. Yeah, I know. Right. Well, that's what it did. A couple benefits, It showed me how much I just grab it just because i'm gonna grab it Now whether that's i'm like looking for things or posting. Yeah, like I didn't post anything for the podcast that day I thought oh I should probably post something but I didn't do it. I waited and And every time I grabbed my phone it would remind me like oh, that's right. And I had two specific prayers. I was praying about So when I grabbed my phone, I think, Oh wait, okay. My two prayers are, and I would pray my prayers about two things that were really important and kind of upcoming, well, actually we're happening last week. So I thought I'll do it till like lunchtime. I can make it that far. Listen, I waited till the next day went past lunchtime. Yeah. I went into the evening because eventually it wasn't. It wasn't a trigger for me like pick my phone up praying my mind just thought oh, I should pray about those prayers without even grabbing my phone Oh, that's so good. So at first it was kind of forced like oh, yeah I'm not supposed to be on my phone and then it just became almost like a peaceful Peace filled thing for me. I love that. So then I would just pray the prayers without having to be prompted Yeah to pray the prayers. Yeah, so it was really beneficial for me. Yeah a I've been I really discovered how often I am on my phone. I know. and B, I had prayed those prayers in my quiet time, but I was reminded of them throughout the, throughout the day to pray for them. So that was my experience and, very valuable and I will probably do the social media fast again. I'm thinking maybe I've given myself an out by doing the food fast, I can be on my phone scrolling all day long and just, you know, And just not eat. Yeah. Just not eat lunch. Yeah. I know. Oh gosh. So. Well, I love that. I love that you tried that in it. Yeah. It was so good and refreshing. You inspired me. Well, There's just a lot of benefits from being off social media. So I'm glad that you did it. Yeah. It's good. Well, today we're going to continue our theme for this season, which is spiritual formation. And we have another spiritual practice to explore. We've talked through the spiritual practices of confession and fasting, like we said, the last two weeks. And today we get to celebrate, celebrate good times. Come on. I was Waiting for you to sing it. I knew you would. I'm gonna sing in this one. I knew you would. I can't help it. I can't help it. Love it. So that's the practice that we're going to talk about today. It's the practice of celebration. So celebrations aren't anything new to us. We have them all the time. My husband's birthday was last week, you know, so we celebrated. In fact, he was so sweet. He said, To me actually back up. He wasn't actually here on his birthday, right? Super sad and I was disappointed. He was disappointed. My kids were disappointed because we have these Traditions that we have, you know, just put into our lives that Have just become a part of our every every year birthday celebrations and eric said to me i'm so sorry I wasn't here on my birthday I know the kids were super bummed that they didn't get to do those things with me on my birthday He said you've just done a really good job of training them on how to celebrate and I was like Oh, that's a really big compliment, especially coming from my husband. Who's not a Complimenter. all the time. So anyway, that was really sweet. So we do. We celebrate all kinds of things. We celebrate birthdays, like I said, graduations, weddings, babies, a new job, all sorts of just random stuff, fun stuff. So some of you may not know that celebration is one of the spiritual disciplines and it really is one of the least recognized and possibly practiced of all the disciplines. But also I think maybe we do it and we don't even realize we're doing it. And you just. You just mentioned your traditions of celebrating, Eric, I'm like, Oh, see, you do it. We're celebrating. Yeah, absolutely. So, I mean, I think we are, I think we're doing it more than we realize. We just don't realize that this is an intentional spiritual discipline that we're doing. we don't necessarily label it, celebrate. I'm doing the spiritual discipline of celebrating. Like I'm doing the spiritual discipline of fasting. Like, yes, that makes sense. Right. I'm doing the spiritual discipline of celebration. I don't know. Not celebratory. Yes. This is all fun. Okay. It just doesn't sound as fun. It's just, it should be. Yes. So anyway, so, but celebration as a spiritual discipline, it is a little bit different than just having a party because we do serve a God who longs for us, his people, to be filled with love. rejoicing with celebration and joy. And so it's the celebration that reinforces and shapes our faith. Like all the spiritual formation practices. The purpose is to grow us, to be more like Jesus, to look more like him. So it's helpful to know, yeah, knowing the, just the heart of God that he loves us so much and that he gave us a gift of joy. He gave us a gift of each other. He gave us a gift of celebrating. He didn't have to. Like we can have none of that, right? It can be very somber and, pretty clinical and not a lot of fun or joy, but God's heart is that it would be joy filled. And that's why we see that in the scriptures we'll talk about soon and that we get the opportunity in our own life. Also, you also mentioned that it's a little bit different than just, our other parties or celebrations, right? Because it has, a purpose behind it and it is to form us to be more like Jesus. so let me give you a definition that I came across for what the spiritual discipline of celebration is. It says the practice of celebration involves finding joy in our life, our relationships and circumstances. is as a way to recognize God's goodness and his faithfulness and to celebrate the gifts that God has given us. It was just a nice, concise definition. I love that. It was good. And then St. Augustine's quote was so good. Lili, you came across it. Thank you for letting me read it because it's so good. I loved this. I need to put it on somewhere. I don't know. I don't know. Tattoo it on your arm. Yes. Something. It's so good. A Christian should be a hallelujah from head to foot. Isn't that beautiful? I love that. I do too. It makes me think demonstratively because as we see some of the scriptures in the Psalms for sure talk about this demonstrative celebratory, festivities We dance, we sing. Anyways, so I thought that was a great definition. and joy really is at the heart of celebration. Like I said, God. Create a joy for us to enjoy. You didn't have to do that. So, and it really permeates all the other disciplines joy does rather than like we talked about other episodes, just making the spiritual practice kind of legalistic and boring and, not life giving, but maybe just another thing to do, which is not the goal at all. So joy, really is the end result of these spiritual practices. I think, As we see our lives transformed to look more like Jesus, the fruit of the spirit comes to mind and joy is one of those, we see that in Galatians five. So love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self control. These are all the things that happen inside us as we're transformed to be more like Christ. And then the things that are just really kind of troublesome, you know, sin. our anger or our, if we're dishonest or resentment, those things get a little squashed out as we spend time with Jesus and our hearts become more like him. And that affects everything. It affects our relationships with each other, either in our household or our friends, work, even just acquaintances or like people we meet at Costco, right? Like there's plenty of people at Costco. That have been kind when you bump into them. And then there's some just, just are not. Yeah. Very nice. Yeah. They need to spend some time in spiritual discipline. So, again, the spiritual discipline is celebration is kind of the culmination of sorts. yeah. Of all of them put together. So when we spend time in either confession or fasting rest or solitude, silence, meditating on scripture, prayer, whatever the spiritual practice may be, that causes us to celebrate. I think it gives us eyes to see the Lord's good gifts in our lives and his mighty work in our lives because we've spent time and the other spiritual practices that causes joy to well up in us so that we celebrate. So. and we see it throughout scripture to, in several places, you're just kind of give us like a broad stroke of it. We see it in the Bible, We see it a lot in the Old Testament, the Israelites were instructed to observe various feasts and festivals and acts of remembrance and celebration. And then in the New Testament, because Jesus himself was. a Jew, he participated in the same feast and the gatherings from the Old Testament and one of the most well known celebrations is the Last Supper where Jesus gathered his disciples during Passover and they did, Lord's Supper. And that goes all the way back from their exit from Egypt. they were doing that. Supper because that was what happened as the people left Egypt and here they are celebrating year after year the Lord's goodness in his delivery. so I don't know if you have any Jewish friends But I have it just because I'm a photographer. I have gotten invited to some Jewish Celebrations and they are some of the most beautiful Things I've ever been a part of. So I got invited to photograph a baby naming ceremony So this was for a little girl and. I mean, the, just the way of the Jewish people is so beautiful. It, the whole thing was so full of joy, the way they're all talking to each other. Try this challah bread. Have you had her challah bread? Try the challah bread and they're bringing it in. You're trying the challah bread and then they get up and they do this beautiful ceremony where they talk about why they named their child, what they named it. And they talk about the history and just. The beauty of their family and what this child means to them. And usually the grandfather's there and there's the Jewish priest is there. And the parents are there obviously to, to do this. And I don't know, there's just something really, I thought, why don't we do this? Like in the Christian faith today, we do, we do a baby dedication, which is, Similar, but this is so different. This is just, it's beautiful. And there are just things that you just see that God put in place hundreds and thousands of years ago and that the Jewish people are still doing today. And when you see it lived out the beauty of celebration. In the Jewish culture. It's, I don't know, you're like, yeah, God, I get it. I get what this is and what you're, what you've done here. I'm so glad you shared that. So, food, they had food. Oh, food, yeah. Laughter, family. Lots of people. And the fathers, the way the fathers are with the children and the way the fathers are with their, their children. Really? They kiss their sons. They, oh, it's, oh, I just want to be like. It's a picture of our father. Can Here with you guys all the time. Can I come to all the baby naming ceremonies? So we see it in the Old Testament and the New Testament. We see it in the Psalms a lot. And then I'm going to read this verse from Philippians 4, 4, but it says, Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I will say rejoice. So I just, we see it a lot in scriptures and we see it practiced. In the Jewish culture today, and I would love to see us intentionally practice it more as, as Christ followers and believers. I'm so glad you shared that. we do have baby dedications. We're really, the baby isn't themselves accepting, a belief or a walk with Christ, but parents are saying we're going to raise our children. In the way. Yes. And during our baby dedications, but typically parents don't, there's no, this is why I picked the name. none of that happens, which is, it's okay. Yeah. It's just typically that our pastor will pray over the family. And I think that's beautiful, but I love just the interaction of all the family. Oh, just generations, generations gathering and the cousins and the, just, I don't know. It's beautiful. It's really beautiful. That is amazing. That's amazing. So, as you said, in your example, a celebration is something that we do. And I mentioned that we can see that in the scriptures and Psalms 150. It's a joy filled celebration. We have timbrel and dance and trumpet and lute and harp and clashing cymbals and dancing, something that we physically do as well as just exude from the inside out. So gratitude, I think is a real springboard for that. obviously, as this new baby is. Born to this Jewish family. They're so grateful. And that's their, that's their external, Manifestation of having this baby is this wonderful celebration. So as you had said, sometimes we do it and we don't know it. And maybe we could talk about that in just a little bit, but here's some thoughts on how to celebrate or what we could celebrate, as we get started in this concept of a spiritual discipline, so we can celebrate just the small things. I think again, like gratitude, like some of us have a gratitude journal, or we, do gratitude prayers, just thinking of the small things that the Lord has blessed with. And we celebrate that it could just be. the most beautiful flower in your front yard or a hot cup of coffee or the sunshine, Breaking through your bedroom window just little things to just celebrate him And who he is so another thing we can celebrate is relationships. I love this one I need to be more intentional about this. I am so thankful for the relationships that are in my life I've been And we do like birthday lunch and those kinds of things, but we haven't, I haven't really done a celebration with a friend. Just I'm just so thankful. Look what God gave us in each other. Let's go to lunch. Yeah. Or let's take a walk together and just tell the Lord. We're so grateful. or even for our children or for our parents, to celebrate who they are to us and what they've been to us. Because that's another way we could celebrate too. I think celebrating with others. That's a, a big one. Lillian and I just made note cause as we were making thoughts for this episode this week about our church had celebrated as a church. 20 years. And we've been doing this at our churches since it began and we did a big celebration downtown in the Ryman. Yeah, which was beautiful, amazing and a beautiful, but that's a kind of a bigger example of people that came and celebrated all in one place, of God's goodness for 20 years and faithfulness to the church. So that's an example of doing a celebration with other people. Again, it could be, it could be a birthday. when our kids were growing up, we had family over and friends over for the kids. I mean, the kids would have a friend party, but we would do a family thing. And at the family party, before the kids blew their candles out, Lance would do a prayer of blessing. So, he would pray a prayer of blessing over our children for the upcoming year and be thankful for the year before, which was such, I just thought that was such a gift. So, birthdays don't just have to be birthdays. We can celebrate God's goodness in them too. Oh, totally. And then, lastly, when we take communion at church, that's another corporate celebration that we do with, our church family, remembering Christ's death and resurrection and then he's seated with the father now and he's coming back. And that's another, large, kind of communal remembrance and celebration. Also like Easter. Oh yeah. Christmas, Easter, I think like you said, if we think of some that we do without knowing we're doing them, these are. This one's one of them over. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. So there are some thoughts on, opportunities to practice celebration. So what about you? have you had times? I mean, Eric, you celebrated Eric for his birthday and tradition. Yeah. We celebrate a lot. I like to celebrate. So I think maybe we do it a lot without realizing it. Like I said, we do have birthday traditions every, every year. Morning of your birthday, you get your breakfast served to you on the red. You are special today plate. So, you know, I mean, I put it out the night before I've got it already. So we do intentionally celebrate each person in my family on their birthdays, which most people are doing. So this isn't anything new under the sun, but, other things that we do, you said, I think you mentioned. Being with friends and spending time, something I did, I can't remember, maybe a year or two ago was at the beginning of the year, I wrote down a list of friends that I wanted to intentionally spend time with. So if there was, if I had time in my week to grab lunch with someone or grab coffee, or if there was a concert I wanted to go to, I had a list of friends that I wanted to. To intentionally spend time with. So instead of always going to kind of the same couple of people, cause I'm really prone to do that and be like, Oh, I know they'll go, or I know that they're available. I'll ask these same three people. I love those three people obviously want to spend time with them, but also there's other people in my life that I want to intentionally. And so making that list really kind of helped me be like, Oh yeah, I haven't seen that person in a long time and I love them. They've, they're so good for me and good to be around. So making that list and being intentional about spending time with the people that are on that list. especially if it's a list of like 20, 25 people, you know, it'll take you a year to get through if you're, if you're a busy mom or work or whatever, it's hard to get through a list like that. So just intentionally spending time with people, I think is a great way to celebrate. And I think I've tried to do that well. over the last several years. And hopefully done that. And then, when my kids have gotten baptized, well, so far, one of my children has been baptized and baptism is a huge celebration. It's a celebration of what God's done and showing everyone in your life that you have chosen to follow Christ and make him Lord of your life. So. Celebrating that is a big deal. And whenever, when Laney was baptized, all my family came, we all came and celebrated her and saw her be baptized and then had a big celebration, lunch, cake. I don't even remember everything we did, but it was really beautiful. And I know what I hope when Kate and Emmy choose and decide to get baptized for themselves, that we will celebrate those things really big as well. So yeah. Yeah. What about you? Are there ways that you intentionally? Well, I'm so glad you're unintentionally. I'm so glad you mentioned baptism because we had done that when our kids were baptized, we did it. We just had opportunity to do it at our house and when we lived in Wyoming, cause we happen to live on the river. friends and family came and baptism happened and we did a barbecue and it was really celebratory. I think part of these celebrations as we do them either with one other person or a group of people is that it makes them so memorable. It's almost like our monument, our mental monument. To ourselves in our mind, our milestone of remembering, Oh yes, that day I do, I remember that day almost as if the enemy were to try to steal part of your assurance or part of your. walk with the Lord say, no, I remember it was such a day we celebrated it happened. So I think it, it makes it more indelible on the person. So we had done baptisms too. And again, it's just something that we didn't realize that we were practicing a spiritual discipline by celebrating that. So I'm so glad you said that. And then this past week, the Lord is upper offered opportunities twice, actually in the same day. thinking about the spiritual discipline of celebration my daughter had called and something that has we've been praying for for about nine months and it's a It's a big deal, but we've given it to the Lord. So it doesn't feel like a big deal anymore, We didn't for sure know what the answer would be on the other side of that prayer where the Lord would allow it to happen or not. And this is my daughter who's a single daughter and it was very impactful to her life. So she called this week and just kind of out of the blue and the answer came and it was great It was so great and the lord is blessing the lord blesses whether we get the answer we want or not In this case it happened to be what we hoped and were praying for So we celebrated on the phone I was raising hands and I was praising Jesus Thank you. I'm so happy So that was just she and I, but, I did. I just welled up with thankfulness and joy for how he answered the prayer. We would have been thankful if he hadn't answered that way, but it was an opportunity for her and I to celebrate together. And then the very same day, my daughter in law called and something that we'd been praying through and she'd been working through for a year. wrapped up that day and it was wonderful and completed so she and I are FaceTiming, praising the Lord on FaceTime like, Oh my gosh, that's so awesome. God is so good. And so I think we can, like you said, I think we, hopefully we do it more often than we realized that we really do it so much. So did this kind of. make an impact on me. I made like a new section in my 2025 journal, like my goal journal. And it's called celebrate. It has its own page. And so I just wrote the both of those things down. So I don't forget this. So like in a year from now you can. Yes. So I can remember that. Yeah. So those are all, those are great, Julie. Yeah. So why, why do we celebrate and what does this do for our spiritual life? celebration, I mean, obviously it cultivates joy in our life. I mean, we see it in scriptures rejoice, rejoice, rejoice. It cultivates that joy to just overflow out of us. We should be a joyful people. People should recognize that in believers, Christ followers, that we are full of joy. So hopefully that celebration would bring about that. But then it also causes us to recognize God's blessing in our lives and to, and to see. See that and to remember that you said that word, remember, so to remember what God's done and then like spending intentional time with friends, it strengthens our community. It develops our relationships with other believers and those so good. And then it deepens our love for God and we grow in gratitude. Just like Julie said, she's starting a page in her journal where she puts down celebration and she can write down the things that have happened that are, that she's grateful for. So. I know sometimes there are bad days and there is bad news and there are hard things. So that can be really, that can be difficult, but scripture tells us that our joy, it's not dependent on our circumstances, but it's rooted in the assurance of God's presence and his promises. So we can try to be a person who intentionally looks for good in God's creation and your neighbor and your family and your world and thank God for good wherever and whenever you see it. And so have a, just a little mini celebration you and God, but if you are walking through something hard and difficult, there's a different kind of joy that comes out on the other side of that. So also persevere, you know, trust God and persevere through that. So I, I may not be running the scripture. So y'all check me. It might, I think it's Nehemiah. 810, but the joy of the Lord is our strength. Yeah. And it feels like that joy that happens is when we need strength and that doesn't feel very joyful sometimes in our weakness, but that's what the Lord is saying, right? the evidence of him is our joy. And so again, being sensitive that there are hard times, in our lives and that try to remember balloons and cake and right. Yeah. Yeah. And we understand that. That's right. Absolutely. Celebration is one of those spiritual disciplines that just kind of multiplies. More celebration means more celebration. And joy means more joy. And laughter, more laughter. And so genuine celebration has the potential to bring healing and wholeness to us and to others by recognizing God's faithfulness and goodness to us. So let's celebrate. I just encourage you this week to Pray about it. Pray about maybe first where you're celebrating and you didn't even realize that you're doing a spiritual practice already and be like, yes, yay. And if you're not, I would just challenge you to ask the Lord to open your eyes to see those times and things and blessings of him that you could celebrate so that you can celebrate this week. that would be my challenge this week for y'all. Absolutely. So thank you guys for listening today. We hope you enjoyed this episode as we talked about the spiritual formation of celebration. It was really fun to talk through this and I feel like we've learned a lot ourselves and I think we've said that every week, like, Oh, I've learned a lot about fasting or whatever else we've talked about so far. Confession. it's been a really good growth for us. So thank you for listening guys. And if you would share with a friend or leave us a review, that is so great for us. It encourages our heart and we love it. We love just hearing from you guys and the things that you were loving to hear about. So remember you have a seat at our table anytime.
